When Peter Fog takes a job as scrub boy and minder of the fires at a mysterious estate, he faces much more than common drudgery. Maybe he can trust his new friend, Clementina Tea, but he can’t be sure about the other members of this privileged, magical, and dangerous household. The master of the house may be raising a rebellion against the king, while the mistress is rumored to sympathize with werewolves. Plots and powers converge upon an ancient house, steeped in soot, and the family that lives amid its roaring fires.

Entranced by the Ravens
"As if in a trance, Peter got up and walked outside. The bird began to fly away, slowly, and Peter followed it. As Peter walked along the street, more ravens began to gather around him. He thought he heard a voice calling him, but it was faint and overshadowed by the resounding beat of wings, heavy and dreamlike. He ended up in a park of some kind, surrounded by maple trees whose sap poured out in a slow but endless stream, forming sugary pools around their roots, where toads wallowed in the sweetness... The raven flock had surrounded him now, and he was caught in a swarm of feathers and piercing eyes."
